Worldwide Unrest And Other Economic Disasters

"There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious—makes you so sick at heart—that you can't take part. You can't even passively take part. And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all." Mario Savio

The worlds inhabitants are in a perpetual state of change as they hurl through space traveling a speed of roughly 67062 mph. Physical laws which govern the Earth are observable to both the trained and untrained eye. As a species, we are not without a rudimentary understanding of how the great cosmic machine works, as well as, our relegated place within it. Darwinism teaches that our world is a dynamic place and that adaptation paves the way of the future but, evolution fails to address the frailty of the planet itself or our condition within it. Such considerations are reserved for other areas of study and the economic element which binds us to our world often taints meaningful discourse or ends the political resolve to end environmentally reckless practices.

As a dominate species, we use the world's resources and don't fully consider the possible consequences to ecosystems as much as we consider venture profitability. Science continually develops new technology for our unabated plunder of the Earth's riches and at ever increasing rates. Meanwhile, industry is quick to mass produce any good which might have a market demand and the jobs created justify the entire unsustainable economic system. The rationale for such a system is that its circular nature is full proof: producers are consumers who are producers who are consumers. This familiar cycle is so ingrained into culture it is largely accepted as a constant and immovable element to society.

Incremental changes are tolerated to maintain a familiar.

In theory, market manipulations such as trusts and monopolies are prevented and this practice is meant to preserve market fairness. To deal with international trade relations and contentions between nations, The World Trade Organization functions as an international trade arbitrator. However, the implementation of minor business ethics and global organizations fails to address the ethical problems associated with a changing global economy.

Free market supporters tend to simplify how the market works by reducing theory down to a few key points, which fail to address a generalized welfare of that which exists outside of the market. A favorite philosophical idea, which is exalted as a truth, is that faulty/overpriced goods will fail to attract consumers in the market and this in turn, will end inferior products or unnecessary production. The cost incurred by the environment to manufacture a good, in theory, is accounted for in its price. The massive amount of waste which results from: duplication of machinery/equipment, transportation and marketing brought about due to competition is never mentioned as a negative because these costs are all a part of making a better or less expensive good. The various choices in goods negate all other concerns. But, can a price tag accurately reflect all costs which are harder to calculate, such as intrinsic costs of resources?

The ethical complexity involved in consumption under such a system is also hard to tabulate, because a good does not tell the consumer basic information which may be critical in determining the real price of that item, for example: what were the working conditions, what amount of pollution was created to make it, does the corporation pay lobbyists which influence governmental policy and undermine democracy? Other serious questions begin to emerge once ethics and a generalized welfare for mankind become a non negotiable standard to economics. The central question becomes...is it possible to reform an economic system which fails to address increasing poverty rates, allows 1/3 people in the world to starve and another 1/3 to be underfed according to World Health Organization, concentrates wealth and encourages warfare as a means to secure waning natural resources amid a growing world population? Can peace ever be achieved under current market based structures as demands to secure remaining natural resources increase?

To answer some of these questions we need only to look at the recent trends of the largest corporations. These corporations are representative of what success means under such a system. Transnational corporations who have limited relationships and sensitivity to communities are proving themselves to be grossly exploitative. In an attempt to increase profitability and undermine competition, corporations have become nothing less than predatory:  natural resources are taken without proper consideration given to the health and welfare of the individuals who reside in the communities surrounding them, workers are viewed as human capital and are prevented or discouraged from collectively bargaining and thus, the leveraging ability of workers is lost in the work place. Finally, unfair taxation, which blatantly favors corporate interests, is steadily shifting more and more tax responsibility away from big capital and onto a struggling working class.

Despite technological advancements which have increased production, wealth has further concentrated to benefit a select few. The workers utopia imagined, as a result of such advancements, has not materialized. In some cases, these technologies have actually created new issues: health problems due to repetitive movements, job loss due to mechanization and poor working conditions such as the inability to go to the restroom/excessive overtime. In fact, working conditions are so intolerable in Foxconn, an electronics manufacturer in China who makes iPhones, that 17 of its employees have committed sucide in the past 5 years, which include 11 who jumped directly off of their building. To remedy this problem, nets have been placed around the building...

Stewardship instead of Plantations.

Under such dire economic conditions it seems irrational not to begin the process of reevaluating current failing economic practices. More importantly, globalism must be defined for what it has come to mean to the West, a corporate and banking cabal which directly opposes and undermines the democratic process and is completely devoid of ethics. These new masters must be regarded with the same revulsion that the serfs once held for the aristocrats of old. Every attempt made to increase the efficiency and productivity of their plantations must be resisted and rebelled against. This must be done as peoples and nations of the world through acts of peaceful civil disobedience and noncompliance. Only then can we stop the relentless attacks on humanity and our Earth by the powerful...this must become our shared globalized mission.

I Corinthians 11:31 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

Now is the time for putting away childish things.

The time has come to demand an end to: the wars and killing, the exploitation of all people, the destruction of our Earth and the ecosystems which sustain us, the loss of the rights of man and the mindless and wasteful consumption which has driven us to the brink of self destruction. The time is upon us to: cherish our life, our Earth, each other and become our brothers keeper. Act as if our very existence depends upon it, certainly peace does.
