Agrochemicals Kill Boy In Paraguay, Explode Watermelons In China

By Rady Ananda [Food Freedom]

Telegraph UK reports on Paraguay’s continuing battle to diminish the use of agrochemicals, highlighting the death of an 11-year-old who was doused by a crop duster and died shortly thereafter. Then, the paper promotes the Round Table on Responsible Soy, when, in fact, RTRS promotes the expansion of genetically modified crops which use glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup. (See More problems with glyphosate: Rice growers sound alarm.)

The overuse of agrochemicals is blamed for exploding watermelons in China, as this video news report reveals:

The chemical, forchlorfenuron, promotes vegetative growth but also interferes with mammalian cell division and cellular morphogenesis, according to a study published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. Researchers found that FCF “dampens septin dynamics and induces the assembly of abnormally large septin structures” and notes that “septins are implicated in many human diseases including cancer and neuropathies.”

CRI English reports that FCF “is not forbidden in China and is allowed in the United States for use on kiwifruit and grapes.”

“Agriculture experts believe that the problem is caused by multiple factors such as the use of forchlorfenuron and sudden heavy rainfall after a long period of dry weather,” CRI said.

A New Zealand website noted that “China is battling rampant misuse of pesticides, fertilizers and food additives, like dyes and sweeteners, meant to make food more attractive and boost sales.”

For a thorough discussion of just how irresponsible GM soy is, visit ToxicSoy.org, which states, “Large scale production and export of soy for animal fodder in meat and dairy industry can never be responsible.”

Regarding human health impacts from these toxic sprays, they note:

“The rate of illnesses and disorders is alarming. Children are especially vulnerable. Images of affected children, or children suffering from birth defects, are shocking. Recently a judge in Santa Fe, Argentina prohibited spraying of soy fields directly bordering an urban neighbourhood. In the urban community ‘Ituzaingó’, in the city of Cordoba which numbers 5,000 inhabitants, 200 people suffer from cancer.
